Phases or Stages of Sleep

Before talking about the phases or stages of sleep, it must be understood that sleep is characterized by the interruption of people’s movement, sensory and alert capacity, but it has a basic and vital function for all living beings. Despite spending close to a third of our lives sleeping and consequently dreaming, it is a very active activity and it could be said that it is the time when we recharge the batteries or make our body and mind recover.

During the sleep period two major stages are distinguished called the slow sleep phase (NREM) and the fast sleep phase (REM: Rapid Eye Movements). The NREM sleep phase is divided into four other distinct phases, each lasting about 90 or 100 minutes, and ends with the REM phase, which we will now explain in order to understand each of them.

  • Phase I

It is the phase of light sleep. In this phase people are able to perceive most of the stimuli, auditory and tactile, and it is from the different stages of sleep the least restorative of all. In this phase it is also characterized by a decrease in muscle tone and the first slow eye movements appear.

  • Phase II

This is the phase when we are able to sleep. The nervous system blocks all access routes of sensory information and we disconnect from the entire environment. The sleep that we have in this phase is partially restorative but it is not considered a complete rest and the eye movements also disappear. In this phase where adults have about 50% of dreams.

  • Phase III

This phase is also called DELTA, it is a deep sleep where the sensory block intensifies. Dreams do not appear in this stage, but there is a decrease in respiratory rate and blood pressure.

  • Phase IV

It is the deepest phase of sleep and is characterized by minimal brain activity. It is in this phase and the DELTA where the physical and mental recovery is greatest. It is not usually the stage where dreams are concentrated but they can happen.

  • REM phase

This phase also called paradoxical sleep and it is where the body is more relaxed and deep sleep. It is at this stage where dreams happen in the form of a narrative and with a plotline. Brain activity in this stage is altered while at the muscular level it is null. So-called nightmares often occur.
